How to Do a Debt Snowball (Free Worksheet)
The debt snowball is a payoff method where you clear your smallest balance first, then roll that payment into the next debt. Each paid-off account frees up more money, so your payment "snowball" grows — and so does your motivation.
Step 1: List every debt
Write down each debt with its balance, minimum payment and interest rate: credit cards, car loans, medical bills, personal and student loans. Leave out your mortgage for now.
Step 2: Sort from smallest to largest balance
Ignore the interest rates for ordering. The point of the snowball is quick wins.
Step 3: Pay minimums on everything except the smallest
Find any extra you can — even $50 a month — and put all of it on the smallest debt.
Step 4: Roll the payment forward
When the smallest debt is gone, add its full payment to the next one. Repeat until you're done.
A worked example
| Debt | Balance | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Store card | $450 | $35 |
| Medical bill | $1,200 | $60 |
| Credit card | $3,800 | $110 |
| Car loan | $9,500 | $290 |
With $150 extra a month, the store card goes first: $185 a month clears it in about three months. Then $245 goes at the medical bill, then $355 at the credit card, and finally $645 at the car loan. (Exact timing depends on your interest rates.)
Snowball vs. avalanche
The avalanche method targets the highest interest rate first and usually saves more interest. The snowball wins on motivation. Many people start with the snowball and switch once the small debts are gone. Pick the one you'll actually stick with.
Tips that keep the snowball rolling
- Build a small starter emergency fund first so a surprise bill doesn't land on a card.
- Pause new card spending.
- Put windfalls (tax refunds, bonuses) straight onto the current target.
- Track it visually — coloring in a chart is surprisingly motivating.
